This article presents a report on the 5 most popular mobile and desktop browsers in the EU during September 2014. Our conclusions and data are based upon information compiled by 51Degrees regarding browsers used for Web access in the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Poland. These countries were chosen as they account for nearly 70% of the entire EU population.

Germany

According to the above data 40% of people in Germany prefer Firefox to browse the Web from desktop and laptop computers. Internet Explorer and Chrome are each favored by a quarter. Safari has a market share of nearly 8% and Opera Desktop is used by 3% of Germans. On the mobile browsers arena Mobile Safari is the undisputed leader with nearly half of all Web requests. Android browser is the runner up with 30% of the market, followed by Chrome Mobile (15.3%), Firefox for Mobile (1.8%) and Internet Explorer Mobile (1.6%).

In the Desktop browser market France tends to favor Internet Explorer (36.6%) followed by Chrome (29.4%) and Firefox (23%). For Safari and Opera Desktop the situation is similar to that on a German market with 9% and 2.3% market shares respectively. In the Mobile browser market Mobile Safari accounts for 3/4 of all Web requests. The remaining quarter is shared by Android (18%), Chrome Mobile (7.5%), Internet Explorer Mobile (1.7%) and Chrome for iOS (less than 1%).

On the Desktop browser market Internet Explorer and Chrome are the two major players with 39.7% and 36.7% market shares respectively. The remaining quarter is divided between Firefox (12%), Safari (9.5%) and surprisingly, Outlook (1.76%). The mobile browser market holds no surprises with Mobile Safari responsible for nearly two thirds of all Web requests. Android (14.3%), Chrome Mobile (12.3%), BlackBerry (2.7%) and Internet Explorer Mobile (1.85%) share the remaining third.

Italy

Half of the Web requests on the Italian desktop browser market originate from Chrome (47.8%). The remaining half is divided between Internet Explorer (27%), Firefox (18.6%), Safari (6%) and Opera Desktop (Less than 1%). Mobile browser market data is surprising with Android (43%) taking a larger share than Mobile Safari (34.2%). Chrome Mobile accounts for 17.2% of all Web requests, followed by Internet Explorer Mobile 4.3% and Chrome for iOS (1.6%). It's worth noting that only about half of the population of Italy has Internet access which may correlate with the unusual pattern of data.

Chrome is the most popular browser on the Spanish desktop browser market. 45.6% of all Web requests originated from Chrome. Internet Explorer is accountable for nearly 30% of Web requests. The remaining market share is split between Firefox (17%), Safari (6.5%) and Opera Desktop (1%). On the mobile browser market Mobile Safari is the most popular with 41.6% of the market share. However the gap between Mobile Safari and Android is a lot smaller than in Germany, France and the UK. Android accounts for 35.1% of the market share and is followed by Chrome Mobile with almost 20%. Internet Explorer For mobile and Chrome for iOS both have a market share of less than 2%.

Like Germany Poland tends to favor Firefox (36.8%) the most. Chrome is second (35.%). Internet Explorer is the third most favored desktop browser with 18% market share. Opera Desktop is surprisingly more popular than Safari with 7% and 2.4% respectively. On the mobile browser market of Poland Mobile Safari is the most favorite browser with 41.4% of the market share. Mobile Safari is followed closely by Android with a 36% share. Chrome Mobile is the third most favorite mobile browser (15.6%) followed by Internet Explorer Mobile (5.7%) and Chrome for iOS (1.3%).

Conclusion

No surprises on the mobile market with Mobile Safari accounting for over a half of all Web requests for the above countries. Things are a little less certain on the desktop browser market with Chrome and Internet Explorer each taking a third of the market share followed closely by Firefox.
